iPhone 3G vs iPhone 2G - Comparing Apple with Apples

July 11th, 2008 by Kun

Tis’ the end of the widely anticipated iPhone 3G launch day and as expected O2 and carphone warehouse has run into its predictable shambles of poor delivery and lack of stock.

Despite the reports, I was lucky enough to get my hands on the new iPhone 3G first thing this morning. Happily bouncing into work 1 hour late.

Which iPhone is Which?:

Spot the difference

Appearance :

Can you spot the difference? Just on appearance there is very little difference between the two generations of iPhones. You are doing well if you can distinguish which is which from the pictures above. But no one is buying the new iPhone because the first generation is ugly. Don’t change what’s not broken.

Now, what is great about the new iPhone’s design is the curved back. I remember when I first got the iPhone 2G, I was paranoid I will drop it just making calls. Trust me, this slight change has made it feel so much more secure in the hand. I guess I have to retract my earlier comments on design, but Kudos goes out to the iPhone design team again!

Features:

So, going back to the reason why we did buy the new iPhone: Great new features. - Well things are looking promising. Surfing at 3G really makes a huge difference. I keep looking around wondering which Wifi network I stumbled onto.

The maps now have a little blue dot that moves across the screen as I move across London. The Accelerometer feels more responsive. The voicemail manager screen is so helpful. The screen is definitely much sharper. I even installed the Facebook App which is another promising feature.

Still, with all the new bells and whistles you may have to forgive Apple for missing their core feature: The phone bit. Now, let me know if anyone else has the same issue with Poor signal strength. Throughout the day, I’ve had both phones side by side and the iPhone 3G always has 2-3 bars of signal less then the original iPhone, both on the same network!

*Update: My 5 Hates of the new iPhone

Summary:

Although the iPhone 3G is great and all, right now, to me right now, its only a promising potential. My hacked iPhone 2G still has more functions, more cool apps and best of all I get them all for free. The biggest challenge for the new iPhone 3G is it’s predecessor. There’s lots to live up to!

Just remembered my biggest gripe with the new iPhone. - It does’t give you a new dock, (only a bit of cable). And more importantly, its too fat to fit into the original iPhone dock! WTF!?!

Hi, Thanks for your comments on my blog. Though I would return the favour as this is a good post!

I forgot to mention in my post the stress and hassle I had to go through thanks to o2 and Carphone Warehouse just to get the iPhone in the first place!

I was surprised by your App Store comment, I have really enjoyed it so far. Maybe because a lot of the desktop apps I use such as OmniFocus, Things, Twitterific and NetNewsWire I can now have on my iPhone as well as Flickr & Facebook.

My Top 10 Apps will be up over the weekend I hope, a couple apart from the above i’m really liking at the moment though are Shazam, Remote & File Magnet, check them out if you haven’t already.

I’ve just read my comment back and realised that all of those Apps except Shazam, Flickr & Facebook are Mac only!

I guess if you use Windows you won’t find as much use from the App Store at the moment.

Well apple certainly excel at making technology look cool for all those people out there who like style. However as with most apple products its all about style over substance. The I-phone is packed full of features that really havn’t been thought through and tested in any great depth. This is immediatley evident due to the number of hacks and patches out there meaning only the mostr techy of us can actually get this thing working to its potential. Overall a nice toy to look at but needs more work.

  5. Shaun Says:

I wouldn’t say Apple don’t think their features though.

In fact it’s the very opposite of that.

They take features out that they think users don’t really need. The whole success of the iPod has been about simplicity and the reason Macs are so much better than PCs is that the features just work so much better.

They have made some serious errors with this release but I think it’s because they can’t cope with the scale of the operation. They launched in 22 countries on the same day whereas last time they staggered the launches. They also launched MobileMe and The App Store on the same day.

It was too much for them to handle.

There are plenty of non techy people out there who have their iPhones working properly. I’m not exactly sure what all these hacks and patches you are talking about but I havn’t needed any at all. The problems i’ve had were with MobileMe yesterday but it’s working great today.

  6. Viswakarma Says:

The iPhone 2.0 & MobileMe launch can be compared with the new Boeing 787 Airplane Program. Both are “Quantum” leaps!!!

  7. Boss Says:

IPhone 2G didn’t do offline e-mail like Blackberry. Does the 3G iphone solves that problem.. its a must have feature for people who commute..

Does the 3G iphone solves this problem?

  8. Kun Says:

@Boss: By offline email, do you mean being able to write a email without a connection? Well with both first and second gen iPhones you can always save the email in your outbox and as soon as you have connection, they will send automatically.

As for push email, that’s been solved with the 3G iPhone and MobileMe.

    Hope this helps.

I hate you Kun - you had to get the had to get the 3G ipone before everyone else at Digivate.

And now you have slated it - I am on to YOU!!

I know where you live in Shanghai (LOL)

  11. Budhy Says:

I notice since the beginning on my 2G iPhone that the reception level is definitely not as good as my old (Nokia) gsm, with the same provider and sim card. I accepted that as one of the setbacks on an iPhone.

hi i think that the iphone 3g is much much better that the iphone 2g
